Winter 2019

A blazing hearth awaits in your mansion.

Winter is here. Snowy. Sparkly. Refreshingly peaceful. And thanks to the ancient Greek Prometheus stealing the gift of fire from Zeus, you no longer have to shiver when fluffy flakes blanket the Keweenaw. You can stay warm by the fire in your mansion.

Our library’s gilded-tile fireplace is one of the most relaxing places to settle in after stomping the snow from your boots and shedding your coat and gloves following an exhilarating day outdoors. Although we do admit that as cozy as the library fireplace is, it is rivaled by the flickering flames in your private fireplace in Room 1, the Laurium Suite. Few pleasures are more heartwarming.

Use your fireside time to read a book from our library shelves or your collection. Dog-ear magazine pages. Handwrite letters. Journal. Draw. Needlepoint. Paint. Piece together a puzzle. Listen to music. Have conversations from the heart. Or simply put your life on hold and let the flames mesmerize you.

Sip aperitifs or digestifs from your personal bottles of cognac, sherry, port, liqueurs or cocktail shakers. Munch on fresh-popped corn. Drink hot cocoa (add cinnamon from our pantry for a Mexican flare). Bring in plates of cheeses, smoked whitefish dip, hummus, crisp vegetables, crackers and breads that you collected while exploring the Keweenaw Peninsula.

Use this time to catch your breath. There will be more ski hills to conquer tomorrow. More snow-canopied trails to snowmobile. More thrilling college hockey games to cheer on. More winter festivals to revel in. More snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, skating, shopping and hearty menus to try.

Come to your mansion this winter. We will keep the hearth blazing.

Play games

I understand how tough it is to balance work with play. Work has often weighed in more for me. But at the Laurium Manor Inn, we tip the scales in favor of playing. We’ve converted the 1,300 square-foot ballroom on the third floor to a massive game room. It is your space for friendly competition whether it’s a lively game of charades, strategizing your next chess move, gathering a group for euchre or poker, or spending an hour or two moving pieces on your favorite classic or contemporary game boards (be sure to try Yoopopoly). And yes, with our free wi-fi, you can play Call of Duty, Fortnite and other online games, too.

We keep a stash of games for all ages upstairs, but you can bring your own family-friendly choices. The room is furnished with group game tables and private corners for twosomes. Around the game room walls, we pictorially tell the mansion’s history. You can easily turn those pictures as well as other historic pieces in the Laurium into a scavenger hunt.

We also invite you to bring your own snacks and beverages upstairs. From my experience, playing board games makes you hungry!

Every time I enter the game room, I am reminded how its walls are filled with so many happy memories made from when the Hoatsons lived here until now. Julie and I hope you’ll have fun adding your memories, too.

Save money

For those of you who have only stayed at the Laurium in the summer or fall, you have missed one of our most beautiful times of the year, winter. And if you have never stayed here, let me assure you — the Keweenaw Peninsula does this season better than anywhere in the Midwest. Since our renowned Lake Superior snow machine has already started pumping out the white stuff, this winter promises to be spectacular.

I can think of so many reasons to come here in the winter. Life’s pressures evaporate like steam from a flaky pasty. Phones go ignored except to snap more winter wonderland photos. The things you keep saying you are going to do (sleep more, read more, dream more, write more, exercise more, plan more …), you actually can do them here. And now through April, you can stay with the best rates of the year.
